THIS WEEK’S TIP: Examine Your Routine
How often do you consciously evaluate your daily routine for relevance, effectiveness and efficiency? Many just go through the motions without really taking a step back to understand and affirm the true value of what theyroutinely do. It’s easy to mistake constant motion for progress, and call exhaustion the price for achievement. This doesn’t have to be the case.
Here’s an exercise that I require of all of my coaching clients. For one week, keep a detailed journal of your daily activities, personally and professionally. At the end of the week, scrutinize that list for time wasters (i.e., activities that do not support and advance your priorities). Ask yourself these three questions about each activity: (1) Exactly how does this activity advance my priorities? (2) Is there an alternative activity that can more effectively and efficiently advance my priorities? (3) Is this activity something that someone else can do while I work on higher value activities? I have found that a quarterly examination of my routine yields the most benefits.
If you’re busier than ever but not making desired progress on your goals, I urge you to make doing this exercise a priority. It could be game-changing!
